Orrum PSO

As announced in May 2022, AmSECT and Orrum PSO have partnered together to offer AmSECT members access to this new incident reporting tool to help clinicians understand and avoid safety events during extracorporeal support procedures. Benefits to AmSECT members include:

  • Free submission and analysis of events through the anonymous, confidential, and privileged reporting portal perfusionsafety.com.
  • Access to an exclusive “AmSECT Annual Report” on safety generated from non-identified data provided by the PSO in collaboration with the AmSECT Safety and the Quality committees.
  • Perfusion teams that have universal AmSECT membership can receive a 50% discount on PSO memberships for their facilities.

ORRUM Procedure Acuity event demographics

The Orrum incident reporting system is an independent reporting platform which allows perfusionists to submit anonymous reports for analysis while learning from the anonymous reports that have been submitted by others. Having been reviewed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and officially listed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2021, the Orrum patient safety organization (PSO) is the only PSO in the world that specializes in bypass, ECMO and cardiac surgery. Operated by Orrum Clinical Analytics and affiliated with Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI), Orrum PSO accepts reports of any non-routine event (NRE) ranging from no harm to near miss and sentinel events, in the field of extracorporeal support including bypass, ECMO, VADs, and other ancillary procedures. Information submitted to the patient safety organization is protected by the Patient Safety Act of 2005 and remains privileged and confidential indefinitely.

To date, Orrum PSO has received more than 180 reports which have been used to create over 60 novel best practices. The reports can be submitted anonymously, either directly as a PSO member or indirectly through the secure website perfusionsafety.org. Information reported is processed by event analysts and disseminated as aggregated, non-identified data that is used by manufacturers and providers for product quality improvement, development of best practices and improved patient care. Participants receive event summaries that include a list of contributing factors as well as suggested interventions for risk reduction. AmSECT members receive access to exclusive annual reports as well as possible eligibility for a 50% discount on PSO membership.

Without proper intervention, good-catch and near-miss NREs can initiate complications that lead to larger process failures. The benefits of shared learning from NREs, long recognized in the field of healthcare, include more effective competency assessment, enhanced learning and training, and a reduction of serious adverse events (SAEs).

ORRUM Patient impact and AmSECT Guidelines

“As we are continually looking to foster improved patient care and safety for our members, [our] relationship with Orrum… [is] a natural fit.”

Tammy Rosenthal
Chief Perfusionist, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Past President, AmSECT
